Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Brakes on STX30, power train, hi john

Question
Hi John:

The brake pedal goes right to the floor with no resistance at all - No brakes. The linkage looks fine.  Do you have a diagnosis, and how to fix?

Thanks,

Russ

Answer
Hello Russ:

From your Description it Sounds like the Brake Pads are Worn Out or Require Adjusting. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (STX30) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Power Train, Steering and Brake File. The Brake Assembly is #13 thru 25. I Suggest you Adjust the Brake Assembly First. Usually Adjusting the Brakes are All that is Required. If you Adjust the Brake Assembly and Still have Problems Stopping, then the Pads Require Replacing. The Following is a General Instruction File I Made for this Problem. Readjust the Brake Rods to the Original Positions. Now to Adjust the Brake Pads. Tighten the Center Adjusting Nut Until SNUG. Loosen the Adjuster Nut 1/8 Turn and Try the Brakes. If Braking is Not to your Satisfaction, then Adjust the Center Adjusting Nut on the Disc Brake Assembly Slightly (1/8" at a time) Until the Proper Braking is Achieved. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
