Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ignition coil, cigarette package, homelite

Question
QUESTION: I purchased a small homelite "Ranger" 33 c.c. shainsaw about 6 or so years ago, hardly ever used it except for clearing a few windfalls on my property.  The last couple of times I've used it, I have trouble starting it sometimes.  When I do get it started, it seems to run o.k..  This mornibg it wouldn't start so I removed the plug and it was sopping wet.  No spark.  I checked the ignition switch by unplugging the connection, still no spark.  I took off the ignition coil to get it tested and/or buy a new one but not finding a part locally, I was going to reattach the ignition module but was wondering how close the ignition coil should be from the flywheel magnets.  I had already reattachted the coil earlier and used the single jacket thickness of a cigarette package as a distance gauge.  Still no spark.  I also tested the plug earlier and it is good. Is there an optimum flywheel clearing distance for optimum spark?  Or is my ignition coil shot?

ANSWER: Hello Ellery:

The Coil/Ign Module is Spaced .015 - .020 from the Flywheel. I Usuall Use the Side Panel from a Drink Carton to Space the Coil from the Flywheel. If you Removed the Shut Off Wire from the Coil and Tested for Fire, then you Actually Tested the Coil yourself. If the Magnets on the Flywheel are in Place and are Still Magnetized, then Anytime the Magnets Pass the Coil, it will Fire the Plug unless it is Bad. From your Description it Sounds like the Ign Coil is Bad and Requires Replacing. QUESTION: Thank you for your quick response time.  I've looked all over the saw but cannot find a model and/or serial number.  Is it possible it is under the top cover?

Answer
Hello Again Ellery:

Usually the Model (UT) Numbers are Stamped Into the Engine Block on a Flat Surface. Usually this is Near the Carburetor or Near the Muffler. I Did Finally Locate 3 / 33cc Chainsaws in the Microfiche and Located the Breakdowns Online for you. You can View a Breakdown of this Unit at this Site Addy; http://www.homelite.com/service_support and Select Order Parts. Now Select "Click to Launch Homelite Catalog". Now Enter the Model Numbers (UT-10901, 10901-A or 10901-B) and Click Search. Now Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can View the Breakdowns for this Unit. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Do Not Worry About Locating your UT Numbers. Use the UT-10901 Numbers for the Model/UT to Locate the Breakdown of this Unit. All 3 Units are the Same Except for Some Internal Components. Thanks.
