Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): too much oil -- now wont crank, craftsman riding mower, briggs and stratton

Question
Craftsman riding mower with Briggs & Stratton 16 HP OHV with Turbo Cool --- Model 310707.  I repalced the air filter, spark plug,& changed the oil.  The sticker said capacity was 48 ounces.  I mistakenly put in double that amount.  I know ... stupid mistake.  I mistook three pints for three quarts.  Anyway, I bled it down to the right amount of oil and tried to start it.  It won't make a full revolution of the crank shaft, but acts like it wants to start.  Have I completely ruined the engine?  Or is it something just blocking or binding the shaft?  Help, please.  Jeff

Answer
Hello Jeff:

LOL. Sorry I had to LOL. It makes me Feel so Good to Know I'm Not the Only One Who Goofs from Time to Time. The Engine should be Fine. Remove the OHV Cover/s, Spark Plug/s and you May have to Remove the Crankcase Breather. Make sure there is No Oil Under the OHV Cover/s and in the Cylinder/s. Turn the Engine Over Several Times with the Starter to Clear the Cylinder/s. Replace the Spark Plug/s and OHV Cover/s. Start the Engine. If the Engine Smokes and the Smoke Does Not Clear Up after a Few Minutes, then Shut Down the Engine and Remove the Crankcase Breather. Disassemble and Clean the Oil from the Crankcase Breather. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the B. Then Select Briggs and Stratton. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Select the File #31. Then Select the Folder #310700. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
