Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): how to rewire, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
Hi Fred, I just bought a new 16 hp honda gxv530 to replace 15.5 hp briggs & stratton engine (model 28N707, type 0173-01) of Crafman turbo cool riding mower. Everything fits well, but their wire plugs don't match each other. I don't know how to    do it correctly. Please help

Answer
This is always an issue when changing engine manufacturers.  The Key switch may be different.

Can you start the engine?  If so use a multi meter to find the charging system wire.  Then find the wiring schematic for the tractor and find the correct color wire to connect it to.  Then find ground and be sure the ground terminal on the key switch is grounding when the key is off.  Use a resistance test with an Ohm Meter.

Was this tractor offered ever with a Honda engine?  Is other a similar Sears tractor with a Honda engine?  If so get the wiring schematic for each and compare.

If not each wire will have to be traced and tested and identified.  Each circuit will have to be tested to find the right combination.
