Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Power loss when blades are engaged, craftsman lawn tractor, briggs stranton

Question
I just bought a used craftsman lawn tractor model 917.272751 with a 18 hp briggs & stranton engine.  The engine idles fine until you engage the blades.  It was taken to our local di-center and they said that they fixed it.  Any ideas of what could be wrong.

Answer
If the engine just dies like you shut it off it could be the seat switch or the PTO switch.  If you loose power and die it may be anything from belts to the engine.

Check all the belts and be sure the deck is not stopped up with grass.  Check the spindle bearings to be sure they are free.  Be sure the clutch is operating ok.  If electric it engages and if a mechanical clutch make sure the linkage is free.  If all is ok under the tractor it's the engine.  Have a breakdown test done.  It will show the condition of the engine. Hope it helps.
