Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler 23 HP vertical shaft CV675, crankcase oil, vertical shaft

Question
I recently had my 7 year old Craftsman mower (Kohler) seize up and throw a rod.  I use the tractor only for mowing.  I change the oil twice a season and the filter once.  The oil level was spot on when I started to mow; 5 minutes later, POW.  Is this a common occurrence for this model engine?  Kohler gives a 2 year warranty.  What options are available - other than buying a new engine @ $1,200.00?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hello George:

This is Not a Common Problem with this Model Kohler Engine. It is Rare for a Kohler to do as you Described. Did the Crankcase Oil have a Gas Smell or was it Contaminated with Gas? Usually what Happens is the Carburetor Float Needle Valve will Stick and Flood the Engine or the Diaphragm in the Fuel Pump goes Bad and Contaminates the Crankcase Oil. The Gas then Seeps by the Rings and Contaminates the Crankcase Oil. The Crankcase Oil is then too Thin from the Gas and you have the Problem you Described. I Looked at the Breakdown of the CV675-75546 as this is Listed as being on the Sears Riding Mowers. You have 3 Choices: 1- Purchase a New Engine. You Get a Warranty. 2- Purchase a Short Block and Use the External Components of your Engine. You Get a Warranty. 3- Rebuild this Engine and Install a New Crankshaft and Connecting Rod. This is ONLY if NO Damage was Done to the Inside of the Engine Block and Cylinder. No Warranty. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
