Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Burned up resisters on circuit board- john deere 266, resisters, charging system

Question
I went to start my 3 year old J. Deere Lx 266 16 hp (Koehler engine) today and it would barely turn over.  The battery was dead. I have had no problem with the battery this spring cuting the grass a few times and it was taking a charge... i asssumed.  When i jumped the tractor it started right up but the alternator light on the dash stayed on and i smelled something burning. I found the source of the smell and slight smoke was from 2 small resisters on the circuit board for the tractor.  I know i did not jump it improperly, could these bad resistors be why the battery was dead? or have anyhing to do with the charging system?

Answer
Hello Steve:

This Problem is Caused when a Small Engine Mower that Uses the Circuit Board and Diodes are Jumped with a Vehicle that the Engine is Left Running During the Jump. A Vehicles Alternator i Much Larger than a Stator on a Small Engine and the Vehicles Alternator will Blow the Diodes Most Times. Replace the Circuit Board. Charge the Battery in the Mower and then Start the Engine. If the Mower Requires a Boost, then Use Just a Battery. Once you have the Board Replaced and have the Mower Engine Running, then Use the Charts at the Following Site Addy to Check the Engines Stator/Alternator and Voltage Regulator (if it has a Regulator). http://www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/alternator_id.pdf . You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
