Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Eager-1 Replacement Engine, craftsman eager 1, proper shaft

This is a follow-up to finding a replacement engine for the Craftsman Eager-1 lawnmower 6.75HP, Model # 917377610, Craftsman engine part number 143.986706.

It seems like no one has a direct replacement for this engine, it does not have electric start.

In trying to find a replacement, I understand the shaft length is very important.  Do all engines also have the same mounting pattern.  This is a shelf propelled walk behind lawnmower so the shaft has an adapter on it to hold the pulley.  If an engine with the proper shaft is no longer available, are the blade attachments usually the same that I can use the same blade mounting hardware and blade.

I have spoken to Tecumseh and they told me that the only thing you can do is get a new short block and rebuild this engine using your parts with new gaskets,seals,bearings and anything else that looks bad.If you want to do it that way I can get you the short block.
