Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere stx38 transmission, john deere stx38, apptitude

Question
QUESTION: just bought this used mower, while moving forward, mower will slow down then jump back up to speed, does this in all gears and reverse, please help

ANSWER: Hello Terry:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers (STX38) and Click Find. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Is this "Slow Down" Gradual or Sudden. Example: While Riding the the Mower, it Hesitates Briefly then Catches and Continues to Move. The Mower does this at About the Same Intervals. If Yes, then there is a Tooth Missing from the Input Bevel Gear in the Transaxle. If the Mower is Slowing Gradually and then Resuming the Correct Ground Speed, then Check for a Bad Idler Pulley Bearing. There are 3 Idler Pulleys on this Unit. From your Description it Sounds like a Broken Tooth on the Bevel Gear. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: thanks for answering John, how much trouble would it be for me to try and fix this problem myself, I do have some mechanical apptitude, that bevel gear runs around $87, better than buying a new transaxle for $287, thanks

Answer
Hello Again Terry:

You should have No Problem Replacing the Bevel Gear or Any of the Other Components that you May Deem Need Replacing. The Transaxle Breakdown Makes the Repair Simple. You May have a Few Questions and I can Assit you if you Do. While you have it Split, I Suggest you Clean and Flush the Entire Unit with Kerosene and then Allow to Dry Overnight. Then Visually Inspect All the Components Possible, without Completely Disassembling the Transaxle Any Further than you have to to Complete the Required Repairs. Then Refill with Synthetic SAE 30 Engine Oil. To me the Hardest Part of this Repair is Removing the Transaxle From the Frame. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
