Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ride on lawn mower keeps burning and breaks drive belt off, hp engine, pulleys

Question
QUESTION: i have a 1998 craftesman automatic ride on lawn mower with 20.5 hp engine the model #is 944-600801 i changed the drive belt on it because it burned it off and broke it and when i put the new one on it worked fine for a few minutes and did the exact same thing burned it off and broke it i put the belt on the proper way i am in desperate need for help what could make it keep burning the belts off and breaking them thanks you

ANSWER: Hello Tim:

Check the Pulleys that the Drive Belt Routes on. One of these Pulleys has Bad Bearings and is Locking Up. This Burns and Breaks the Belt. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: i cheked the pulleys today and they seemed fine i had them bth off what i did notice is that the guides in front of the pulley on either sides  were bent down so the belt was probably not riding through the guides because they were below the belt and the second thing i figured out i had a buddy of mine who was suppose to know how to put a drive belt on had put it in around the the two little pulleys the opposite way it should have been could this have caused my belt to burn and break or could it be the rear end which is my worst fear

ANSWER: Hello Again Tim:

If the Belt was Routed the Opposite Direction on the Idlers, then the Belt Would have been Rubbing the Guides and that Would have Burnt the Belt. Block the Rear End Up and Turn the Transaxle Pulley. If there is Binding you can Feel it. Thanks.

QUESTION: the mower is an automatic so when i turn the pulley on top of the rear end which i have already tried it turns free as a bird even without it jacked up i think the problem was the belt being on backwards and the belts guides being bent that might have done it just appreciate and was glad to hear an expert opinion so what do you think i dont have another belt to try right now have one ordered because i bought one locally  and it cost me 50 dollars little pricey so i will respect your final diagnosis in a response thank you

Answer
Hi Tim:

I Agree with your Diagnosis. You can Also Purchase an Industrial Belt from your Local Automotive Parts Retailer. I Use these Belts All the Time. A $50.00 Mower Belt is a $15 - $20 Industrial Belt and they Hold Up as Good as or Better than an OEM Mower Belt.
