Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ariens HTH Model 934020 Kohler MV18S, jumper wire, safety switches

Question
HI  John,
Ariens HTH Model 934020 Kohler MV18S Spec No. 58532

I was able to disconnect the white wire, ground, to the coil. Two  wires were in the connector so I disconnected the connector and jumped the purple wire to the coil.
I was able to start the engine and it ran well. I turned the ignition key Off and it would not shut off. So I plugged the connector back in and the engine shut down.
So I installed a On/Off toggle switch in line with the white wire. In the Off position the engine will start.....I then turn Off the toggle switch and the engine will shut Off. Then I turn the ignition switch Off.
I went to each safety switch individually and bypassed it with the connector to the coil plugged in. I could not get it started with any of the switches bypassed.

So with my toggle switch in line with the white wire and it turned Off, breaking the connection, the engine WILL start.

In order to turn the engine Off I turn the toggle switch Off and the engine will turn Off. I then turn the Ignition switch Off.

I now see that I have No Voltage to the mower clutch with the mower switch on. I jumped, with 12 Volts, the clutch and it does work or "click".

I now have to find why there is no voltage to the clutch. Now.....when I try to start the engine and the engine is rotating well with the starter and I turn the mower clutch switch on the starter will quit!!

Better but still confused. Can you give further help?

Answer
Hello Again Don:

You have a Safety Switch or a Bad Harness Causing this Problem. By Disconnecting the Coil Shut Off Wire and the Fact that the PTO Does Not Engage, you have Determined this. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHECKING THE SAFETY SWITCHES IS JUST THAT!!! FOR CHECKING ONLY. I NEVER Suggest a Mower be Operated with a Safety Device or Switch Disconnected or Bypassed. Now. On Some Model Mowers you can Simply Unplug the Safety Switch from the Harness. On Other Models you have to Place a Jumper Wire Between the Harness Terminals (on the 4 Post Switch Jumper from Same Color Wire to Same Color Wire). Check the Clutch/Break and the Blade/PTO Safety Switches First. Check the Seat Safety Last. Usually the Seat Safety is Not in the System for Starting the Engine. Just to Ensure Someone is in the Seat when Engaging the Transaxle and/or Blades. The Seat Safety is One that Works with the PTO and Clutch Switch. If the Seat Safety is Bad, you Can Not Engage the PTO or Clutch without the Engine Shutting Off. You can View a Breakdown of the Mower at this Site Addy; http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. The Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Ariens) and Enter the Model Numbers . Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. There is Also a Time Delay Module that you May need to Jumper and a Relay that can be Bad.
