Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): POULAN BLOWER REPAIR, digital voltmeter, air gap

Question
HELP PLEASE!  I am fairly experienced in working on small engines buT I have a Poulan Pro blower PBV200 that is kicking my butt!  It is a 25 CC engine, same as is on the Sears modelS.  The blower has only about 25 run hours on it, has always had mixed gas, etc.  It was runing OK, shut it doWn for 5 months or so and then would not run.  I fiGured carburator was clogged but after using started fluid (no luck) checked spark and it was not visible.  Replaced plug with Bosch and a used one from another engine but no luck.  I figured ignition module so ordered one. Still no spark when pulled by hand  I can hook a drill to shaft and spin and get a spark but none when using pull rope.  I even grabbed the plug with my hand and can barely feel a tingle.  I set the gap several times from .010 to .020, no change. The resistance (digital voltmeter) is different on new ignition module than old one so am wondering if I got the correct replacement part but don't know what is normal.  Looks a ittle different but fit is exactl so figured no problem???  Actually figure it's odd that original ignition module is bad since it was running when it was shut done.  Cleaned carb with carb cleaner just to be sure.  Primer bulb causes bubbles so I figure carb is clean.  The lack of spark bugs me.  I remove sparkplug and use a clip lead to ground base to engine for ground. Flywheer magnet is still strong and will pull feeler gauge tight.  Don't know what ele to co?  Help please.

Answer
I would dis-connect all wires connected to the coil...i.e. the shut-off wire.  Test for spark using an inline spark tester with .166 air gap.  This gap simulates conditions under compression when the coil must have enough power to produce spark.  Most small engine inline ignition testers have the correct gap.

If you have the coil isolated, and the air gap at .010-.020, you should have spark when cranking the engine by hand.

I wouldn't rule out bad carb gaskets...sometimes they dry out when stored even for a short time.

Since you have experienced, do you have a gas/oil mix primer test bottle.  A quick way to check igntion compression is to prime the engine with a small pre-mix squirt bottle to see if the engine starts.
Let me know if you tried priming the engine.
