Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Internationsl Cub, cub mowers, proper manuals

Question
QUESTION: John, First of all thank you for taking the time to answer the many questions from total strangers.

Our International Cub 149 with Hydrostatic Drive slows down when going up a small grade.  Also the deck starts to drop after it has been raised.

Can the hydrostatic unit be rebuilt?

Does it have to go to a dealer?

Can I purchase the parts?

Can the tractor be converted so that the drive is on a pedal instead of on the dash?

Thank you
Chris

ANSWER: Hello Chris:

Thanks for the Good Words. I Hope I am Helping Most of the Questioners I Assist. **I Usually Suggest a Hydro Transaxle be taken to the Dealer for Service. Some Special Gauges and Tools May be Required to Perform this Rebuild. If you want to Get the Information and Think it Over,**  then, 1- Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The 149 is the Series Model. 2- On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You. Depending on the Model and the Availability of Parts will Determine if this is a Hydro that can be Rebuilt. 3- It May have to go to the Dealer, Depending on the Model. 4- Depending on the Model, Parts May be Available Online or Locally. The Model of the Mower will Determine if this Conversion is Possible. I have Performed this Conversion on a Few of the Cub Mowers and have had Satisfactory Results. Also the Conversion Did Not Remove or Interfere with the Dash Control. You had a Choice of Which to Use. I have had 3 or 4 on which I was Unable to Make this Conversion. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: John,

Thank you again.

The only numbers that I could find on the tractor was 2050047U495847  it was located on the hydrostatic unit.

I purchased the tractor in the mid 1990's and have never changed the hydro fluid or filter.  Could that be part of the problem?  How do you check the level?  Any external adjustments for these?

Thank you
Chris

Answer
Hello Chris:

If this Hydro has a Filter, then there should be a Resevour or a Fill Plug to Change the Oil and Filter. Also if the Belt is Slipping this will Occur. This Hydro has to be Serviced by a Dealer (MTD Purchased IH Mower Division). If a Resevour, then it is Filled to the Full Line on the Tank. If a Fill Plug, it is Filled to the Bottom of the Plug Hole. SAE 30 Engine Oil is the Hydro Fluid for this Transaxle. The 149 is Supposed to be Almost like the 145. A Complete Service Manual is Avaliable Online at this Site Addy; http://www.ihregistry.com/manuals/service.php and Select the Manual for the 86, 108, 109, 129, 149, ect. My Manuals and Microfiche are in the Shop for this Mower and it will be Monday 11/26/07 before I will have Access to them. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please.
