Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mower Deck, model numbers, craftsman

Question
Hello, I am trying to "calibrate" if you will, my mower deck on my Craftsman LT400 (917.256451).  I took the deck off today to refurb it, paint, grease, etc.  I noticed the idle are stiffner (108) in mower diagram...this has two holes in it, one that says 42 and the other says 38.  The arm was in 42...but I believe I have a 38" deck.  How do I measure my deck and where should the arm be?  I just ordered a new belt because it was very loose and worn, so while I have the deck off, I want to make sure it is put back together right.  I was also told that there are supposed to be springs for the idler pully to help tighten the belt.  I don't see them.  Where should the be?

Thank you,
Todd

Answer
Hello Todd:

There are No Springs on the Idlers of this Model Deck. According to the Model Numbers you Sent me; This is a 38" Cut Deck. The Deck Belt is Part Number 144200. Measure a Blade from the Sharpened Edge Tip Diagonally to the Other Sharpened Edge Tip. It Should Measure Approximately 19" for the 38" Deck and Approximately 21" for the 42" Deck. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
