Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts L17.542 Lawn Tractor, engine flywheel, fusible link

Question
QUESTION: John, I am having trouble with my tractor.  It has a Kohler CV 491 S engine.  I
just replaced the starter and battery for the tractor.  The engine is not turning
over.  At some point the wiring between the battery and the Starter begin to
smoke.  I think it is the fusible link.  I pulled the cover off the engine and I
can here and see the starter mower turn but it does not engage the engine
flywheel.  What do you feel is the issue.  The mower will not start.  I will
replace the spark plug next.  Please advise me.  Thanks!

ANSWER: Hello Arron:

Remove the Starter and Check the Starter Pinion Gear. If the Inner Surfaace of the Starter Pinion Gear is Stripped the Starter will Turn the Gear, but the Gear will Not Lift to Engage the Flywheel. Usually when the Starter Turns and the Starter Gear is Not Engaging the Flywheel, this is the Cause. Replace the Starter Gear. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. QUESTION: I just fried another starter.  It appears to be an electical issue.  I replaced the
battery and spark plug and checked and tightened all wiring.  Then I started
the engine and it turned over and I was able to mow.  Then I stopped the
mower to move something out of the way.  The mower would not start and
the starter seized.  I hear the starter trying to turnover (clicking) but that it.  I
checked the wiring again and noticed that the starter wiring was hot.  So, I
pulled the fuse and disconnected the battery.  What is going on.  Is it the
switch, rectifier?  I am lost here.  Please advise me.  Thanks!

Answer
Hello Again Aaron:

If the Flywheel Key is Damaged, this Problem can Occur. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model). Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel. Tighten the Puller. Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft. Now you can Check or Replace the Flywheel Key. Are you Sure the Battery Does Not have a Weak Cell? How Long Did you Operate the Engine Before you Stopped and then Tried to Restart the Engine? If the Stator is Not Charging Properly, the Battery will Lose its Charge While Operating the Mower. If the Starter and Battery are Good and the Cable Connections are Clean and Tight, then the Compression Release on the Cam May have Broken. This is a Rare Problem, but it Does Happen. If the Compression Release is Not Operating Properly, it will Cause the Problem you Described. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.
