Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman lawn tractor wont start, twin cylinder engines, craftsman lawn tractor

Question
Hi- It's a craftsman 18.5 hp 42"lawn tractor model no. 917.275761.  It was running fine, but when I shut it off to empty the cans, it cranked but wouldn't start.  Called repair person (under warranty).  Said to replace air filter, spark, oil (already did at the beginning of the season), fuel filter. So I replaced the air filter and spark. It cranked and back fired twice but didn't start.  Replaced the fuel filter the next day...now there's nothing...not even a click.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

Answer
Hello Arden:

I have had this Question Almost Word for Word Earlier. LOL. No Worries. I am 99% Sure the Valves Need to be Adjusted. I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms Will have Some Play in them when On TDC) When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .003in -.005in and the Exhaust to .008in - .010in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
