Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engaging the blade stops the mower, hello bill, select shop

Question
I have a problem with my Murray riding lawn mower (<model Number: 38633X92A, MFG-Date: 95314-170674). The lawn mower starts and the engine is operating fine, but when I go to engage the blades, the engine stops (or "locks up") and there is smoke coming from the flywheel (as if something is rubbing against the wheel). The Belt is not tight (but not loose either). Thanks.

Answer
Hello Bill:

If the Smoke is Coming from Under the Blower Housing (Metal Engine Cover), then Either the Stator has Shorted and When you Engage the Blades the Stator Is Not Producing Enough Current to Operate the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid and the Engine Quits or the PTO has Shorted and is Pulling Too Much Current and Burning Up the Stator. For a Breakdown of the Mower Go to this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Murray) and Enter the Model Numbers (40508X92D). Then Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View.
