Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD GT235, fan shrouds, push rod

Question
Engine ran rough on starting. Push rod on one cylinder was out of place. Put back and engine runs fine. Is this symptom of some other problem or just a fluke.

Answer
50-50 shot here.

1/2 the time it's because you have never adjusted your valves and they were just to darn loose.

1/2 the time it's a lot worse.  If you have never removed the fan shrouds and cleaned underneath it you could have overheated your head.  When this happens the valve sticks to the valve guide and moves it towards the springs.

Diagnosis will be easy.  If it happens again, say this month, you will need a new head and new valves. Parts and labor, 350.00.  If it happens again in 100 hours maybe you will eventually learn to adjust the valves on time.
