Question
John, we have a 2004 Briggs and Stratton Yard Machine 4.5 HP. We have had no problems with this mower until this spring, when I noticed it was starting to lose power and bog down while cutting. The engine fluctuates between full power and almost dying the duration of the time it is running. I also noted some white puffs of smoke periodically. We cleaned the air filter, but the problem continues. A friend told us that it could be that the caburetor needs cleaning. If this is the case could you please give me some direction on how this is done? Thank you! Karen

Hello Karen

Your friend is Right; however on the Newer Mowers the Carb is made of Plastic. These Carb have a Tendency to Warp and a new Diaphram and Cleaning won't cure the problem.  The Dead Giveaway to your problem is the Fluctuating between Full Power and Almost Dying.
If you feel I can give you Directions that you can Understand. I would be happy to walk u thru the process of Cleaning the Carb to ensure it will run proper. If you decide to attempt this you will need a Diaphram Kit.  You will need the Engine Make and Model Numbers to Aquire this.

My Model for the Yard Machine is 11A-414l129  407896
I just picked it up today for free and it has the same symptoms as Karen's.
First, I have no idea what the year is. I replaced the plug and filter and ran carb cleaner throught the system.
Is replacing/cleaning the carb fairly easy?
Thanks

Answer
Hello Harry:

I have Found that Most People that have a Breakdown/IPL for Reference Have Very Little to No Questions when they Clean and Overhaul a Carburetor. The Only thing is Don't Remove the Welch Plugs to Clean the Carburetor. Send me the Model Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let Me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
