Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Simplicity Electric Mower PTO, engine stalls, mower deck

Question
John,
As you requested, the tractor is a Simplicity Sunstar 18 hp #1692521 Model 50120.  What is the life expectancy of the clutch?  Is there any way a burr can be repaired?

Thanks for your help.

-----Question-----
I have a Simplicity Sunstar 18 hp with 48” mower deck and appx 300 hours of mowing time.  Recently when the front (mower) PTO is engaged, the engine stalls.  I have checked the clutch clearances are within limits 0.10 – 0.20.  If I turn the blades backwards by hand with the mower and engine off I can hear a scraping noise coming from the PTO clutch in front.  After 5 or 6 tries, the mower engages and runs fine.  Once it is running I can stop the mower and it will start again just fine.  Questions: 1) do I need a new clutch, if so 1) is this a reasonable life expectancy and 2) do I need to buy all three pieces of the assembly?

Thank you very much for your very valuable and generous advice.

Jim

 Hello Jim:

Send me the Model Numbers, Please. With these, I can Locate a Breakdown/IPL and Better Assist you. It Sounds like a Burr on the PTO Base Shaft. Depending on the PTO, It May come as a Unit or in Pieces. Thanks.

 John

Answer
 Hello Jim:

Go to this Addy http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Click on the Parts Look Up Box. Then select the OEM(Simplicity) and Enter the Model Numbers 1692521 and Click Search. Then Double Click on the Model in the Search Results Area. From here you can View the Mower in a Breakdown Format from here. Then Select Front PTO. Check the Ground Wire to the PTO. Some of these are Having a Problem with the Ground Wire Breaking Inside the Insulation. Check the PTO Switch and Ensure the Contacts Are Not Burnt. Remove the PTO and Disassemble the PTO According to the Breakdown/IPL. Mic the Outside Diameter of Diagram # 24 and the Inside Diameter of of Diagram # 16. If the Difference is More than .005in., then Replace the PTO as an Assembly. Hope this Helps. I am here if you Require more Assistance. Let me know what Happens, Please. Thanks.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
