Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 6.5HP OHV choke always open, slow position, start ups

Question -
I have a B&S 6.5HP OHV INTEK engine in a John Deere walk behind mower. The choke seems to stay open all of the time so the mower won't start. I can move the throttle lever to the slow position and the spring relaxes but the choke doen't close. I can push on the link connected to the spring and the choke will close and the mower will start & run fine from that point. If I keep the mower warmed up, subsequent start ups work OK, but if I let it cool down, I have a problem restarting it again. I don't see anything that will try to pull the choke closed. Is there a spring missing from somewhere that is supposed to close the choke?

Answer -
What is the model, type and code number of the engine?  There may be a spring missing, the cable may need adjusting or the arm that closes the choke may need adjusting.

Did the problem start all of a sudden?
Let me know.

Thank you for taking the time to answer me. The model is 121602, type is 0280-E1, and the code is 000926FA. The problem first occured when I started the mower up for the first time this year. It choked, & coughed, & sputtered for about a minute before it kicked in and ran OK. The mower has gotten progressively worse each time that I try to use it. It will now cough & sputter indefinitely unless I push on the link to close the choke. The choke is connected via a link wire (rod). The link is also connected near the front of the engine to a spring, and near the rear of the engine to the governor lever. The other end of the spring is connected to the carburetor control plate (and ultimately the throttle lever mechanism). When the throttle lever is turned all the way down and the carburetor control hits its limit, there is only a very light force from the spring pulling the choke open. If I disconnect the spring, there doesn't seem to be anything pulling the choke in the other direction to close it. The only place that I can see where an adjustment might be possible is the governor lever in the rear. It is screwed to a shaft that goes inside the engine block. Is the shaft connecting to the governor lever supposed to be pulling the choke closed?

Answer
DO NOT adjust the governor...severe engine damage can occurr.

Have you tried adjusting the throttle cable.  On the prior choke engine types a slight throttle cable adjustment usually fixed the problem.

Also, you may want to take the carb off the engine, dis-assemble and clean it with compressed air from an air compressor and carb cleaner.  There may be something binding in the choke system; shaft, butterfly or even debris deposits.

Let me know if this helps.
