Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawn Boy 10330 starting/running issues, water in the fuel, hi bob

Question
If I am able to start my Lawn Boy 10330 4 cycle with either repeated use of the primer bulb or the use of carb cleaner, the engine will usually stay running for only a few seconds.  The engine remained running a time or two for 10 seconds or so but would become rough, slow down and die.  It has spark with a new plug and fuel is getting to the carb.  Ideas will be appreciated.  I'm so paranoid about having the issue be something simple and a repair shop dishonestly "diagnosing" the issue as extensive and expensive.  I love this mower and am disappointed that Toro has discontinued this basic wheel offset Lawn Boy design, so I do want to repair it even if a repair would be expensive.

Thank you so much for your input.

Answer
Hi Bob,

Since it starts and you can keep it running by adding fuel, then the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.  Also check for water in the fuel.
As a last resort, you might need to replace the entire carb.

Let me know how you make out.
