Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan Woodshark Model 1950, exhaust muffler, stroke engine

Question
Mr. Kirkland,
Poulan Woodshark Model 1950
Maintence has been mostly blade related, keep clean and sharp and cleaning saw dust & oil off the saw itself.

Thanks in advance for your help on this matter.  I have worked on mover engines for many years, but never did know exactly how to make adjustments to a 2 stroke engine.  My chain saw has a new blade & the tension is set properly, but it will not cut well.  The motor does not run at full power.  Sometimes difficult to start, but generally starts OK.  Will sometimes run what I call retarded (almost like being on chock).  What do you advise on this; I know it should be fairly simple.  Thanks again.

Answer
Hiya Gary
First thing to do is replace the spark plug- then the air cleaner.  If it still runs retarded, (heh pardon my humor)
remove the exhaust muffler cover and dissassemble the muffler (just a couple of bolts).  Very carefully clean off any and all carbon deposits on and in the exhaust port.  Be very careful not to scratch the piston, or the edge of the port that opens into the cylinder. After this, try it gain.  If it still runs poorly, try to locate the high speed screw and turn it in 1/8 turn in a couple of steps, running the saw in between the steps (if it suddenly runs great- stop adjusting).  Go through this and lemme know what you find.
