Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): smoking motor, oil ring, riding mower

Question
I have an MTD 16 horse riding mower with a briggs and straton engine.  When I first start it and start mowing, I notice it smokes out the front of the mower..smells like burnt oil/  I have changed and checked the oil and it isn't using any...what would make that smoke?  I think it quits after running it for about an hour.
thanks

Answer
 Hello Larry

It sounds to me like the Engine has a Worn Oil Ring. A simple Test for this you can do Youself. When you Finish using the Mower; Park it so it is at a 45 Degree Angle with the Spark Plug Pointed UP. See if it is Still Smoking.  If Not a Worn Oil Ring.  If it Does then it's a Worn Valve Stem or Valve Guide.

 Good Luck

 Respectfully
