Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): No Brakes, murray ride on mower, puck

Question
I have an 18 hp/ Murray ride on mower with no brakes.  Is this a question of a belt or more complicated please.  Thanks.

Answer
If you mower has multiple speeds, i.e. 3 to 5 speeds then most likely the brake pins are rusted and not moving.

On the transmission you will find a small disc and a linkage.  You can try adjusting the brakes but if the mower is several years old then the pins are probably rusted.

To clean the pins, you need to remove the parts and clean with a wire brush.  Do not loose the metal plate behind the brake puck on the pin side of the brake assembly.

The brake system is straight forward so you shouldn't have any trouble other than cleaning the rust off the parts.

Let me know if this helps.
