Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh HM80 Choppy running, point gap, leak gas

Question
Hi Michael,

I have a Tecumseh 8 hp HM80 snowblower engine that is barely running.

I had some spark issues that I have fixed.  I had to replace the flywheel.  The engine now sparks.  I'm wondering about timing.  I replaced the points and condenser and coil.  I gapped the points to .20 but have never done it before and am not %100 sure that it is right.

It will start but only with the throttle set to idle and fully choked.  I can then open the choke but it is extremely choppy.  If I advance the throttle the engine dies and grey-black smoke comes out of the muffler.

The carb is definitely suspect.  Before the spark problem I was pull starting it and it began to leak gas.  I took the carb off and reseated the inlet needle and the leaking stopped.  I may have dirtied the carb although I was somewhat careful to keep it away from dirt.

Thanks in advance.

Kevin.

I have a video of it here http://www.zippyvideos.com/2579481793896206/hpim2129/

throttle at idle
choked

Answer
Hi Kevin,

If the point gap was set with the cam lobe at it's highest spot, you should be okay with the timing.
I suspect a fuel flow problem.  The video (Great idea!) shows some improvement when you choke it.  Try squirting fuel or starting fluid into the carb's intake.  If that helps, then there is probably dirt in the carb and a complete disassembly and cleaning would be needed.  Adding a carb kit might be good also.

Let me know how you make out.
Michael
