Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Adjusting idle on 14HP B&S powered 7kw generator, tendancy, tachometer

Question
I have a 7000 watt B$S powered generator that seems to be turning too fast. It started out being dead (no voltage out), I re-energized it with a 9-v battery, and got too much voltage afterwards (150/300).I changed the regulator but still get hi volts. The machine has a governor arm that must be turned to obtain proper rpms for v-out, and it is this that (in my opinion) needs adjusting...where do I start?

Answer
To adjust the engine rpm you need a single cylinder tachometer.  Adjust the rpm to 3600 rpm.

Some of those engines have a tendancy to collect dirt/debris on the governor arm near the governor shaft that prevents the governor from operating correctly.  I would check this first.

Do you have a tachometer?
Let me know.
