Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B & S Vanguard, carb adjustments, float valve

Question
Hi,
I have a 17 HP single cylinder B & S Vanguard mounted on a ride on mower. Recently I had the engine completely reconditioned (it had been burning oil) and it now runs very well. However, after staring from cold, it surges for a while and if I engage the mower blades the surging is noticeable. When it has heated up ( about 4 - 5 minutes) it settles down an runs normally. Not a big problem but wondered if there is any carb adjustments which might help? Thank you.
Tony

Answer
Hi Tony,

Surging is usually caused by one of two things:  A weak governer spring.  It may be weak even if it looks good.
An improperly adjusted float valve, which doesn't allow a sufficiant amount of fuel into the bowl.

If wouldn't hurt to check the carb jets.  The high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1&1/2 turns out.  Adjust it to give good acceleration and top speed while keeping the screw as far out as possible.  The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out.  Adjust that to give a smooth idle.

Let me know how you make out.
