Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton 5hp main needle jet, briggs and stratton, needle jet

Question
Hi.
I have a older 5hp b&g model 130202 0135 01 7110297 that won't start. I've taken it apart and cleaned the carb as it was not getting fuel (setting for a long time). I would appreciate a little help with resetting the main needle jet. I have adjusted it by closing it down then opening it 3 and 1/2 turns. Is this a good starting point.
when I prime it with starting fuid it starts then stops. ANy help would be appreciated. without a prime it pops sometimes but doesn't contimue to run.

Answer
Hi John,

The high speed mixture screw is initially set at 1&1/2 turns out.  Then adjust it to give good acceleration and top speed, while keeping the screw more open rather than more closed.  The low speed mixture screw is set at 3/4 turn out, then adjust to give a smooth idle.

If it still quits, I would suspect a clog somewhere.  I would add a rebuild kit if you haven't, including the new diaphram.

Good Luck.
Michael
