Snowmobile Repair: 96 storm 800, polaris sleds, grinding gears

i have a 96 800 storm it has reverse and when my friend broke the chain in the tower he replaced it but now reverse doesnt work it goes in but when you hit the gas you hear it grinding gears so what should i do

  It sounds like your buddy didn't put things together properly. Your best bet would be to either have it serviced, or open up the drop case and take a look at it. You may want to get a diagram from your dealer, so that you can tell if everything is installed properly. I would imagine the problem is either the shims (like small washers) are not installed behind or in front of the gear and is causing miss alignment, or the linkage isn't connected properly. The cases on older Polaris sleds are pretty straight forward, so it doesn't hurt to take a look. Let me know if you need any help or run into trouble. Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
