Steering Column Repair: Tilt steering column locked, release lever, column position

Question
2003 Buick LeSebre.  The adjustable tilt steering column is locked in the full up position.  The release lever moves freely back and forth and has know effect on unlocking from the full up position for adjustments.  Any ideas how this problem can be solved?

Answer
Hi Mike:

The tilt has basically hyperextended.  This is not uncommon.  What you need to to is actually force the column position even higher than it already and then pull the release lever.  This will release the mechanism and you can then lower it.  You need to overcome the stop that should have prevented this problem, so if will take some effort.  Don't break it, but you will need to be strong with it.
Once released, it should come back to full function.

Good luck
Doug
