Steering Column Repair: ignition switch, ford steering column, ford f 150

Question
Hi,

I have a 1989 Ford F-150 with tilt steering column. The problem is with the ignition switch.

The switch will work in the accessory and ignition position but won't run the starter. Also, now the switch will operate without the key in it. I'am not sure which part I need to replace, the ignition switch, the key cylinder, or something else?

I would be grateful for any advice.

thanks,
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob:
It sounds like you have a bad ignition lock cylinder AND a broken ignition actuator, not a bad ignition switch.  These are 2 of the most popular parts that fail on your design.
We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 1991 Ford Truck, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply follow the links and order whatever you need online (or email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally).

Good luck

Doug
