Steering Column Repair: Key & cylinder, add a starterm button, jeep cj 7, starter solenoid

Question
I have a '79 jeep cj-7, no tilt, the key and cly is bad but will turn on but not start. I would like to install a momentary toggle w/cover, the starter is 1 battery cable from the fender mounted solenoid, what wires would I connect to the toggle? Thanks

Answer
Hi Greg:

To answer your question, the purple wire is the one that engages the starter solenoid.  Any Red or Orange wire will have power all the time.  The pink or brown wires are only hot when the key is on.

However,  why don;t you simply replace the lock cylinder.  The cylidner is the same as a GM column....we have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to replace the lock cylinder on GM vehicles.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions. Here is a link to that page.

Lastly, I would have a new lock cylinder in hand before you begin, to see what you are working on (hidden in the column) and accomplish finishing this job quickly.

Good luck
