Steering Column Repair: Chevelle steering column 67 Chevelle, steering gearbox, steering wheel

Question
I recently had to drop the steering column on my '67 Chevelle, automatic on column, with power steering, to replace the speedometer cluster.  When it was re-installed the steering was affected, I'll try to describe best I can.  It feels like the steering wheel hits a high spot, catches, then comes loose, and becomes normal until it catches again.  Most times it catches at top dead center.  I never had any steering problems until the column was dropped down.  All the front end steering components have been replaced as part of the restoration. The car is not safe to drive with this problem.  Appreciate your help.

Answer
Hi Ray:

Sorry about your problem.  Although this one tests my memory, I think your problem is in the 'rag joint' at the bottom of the column.  That;s where the flexing happens when you rotate the wheel.  You don't say if it's a tilt or fixed column (I'm thinking fixed in 1967).  Since you didn't disassemble anything in the column it will be something binding subsequent to your dropping the column out of position.  that's why I suspect the flex joint just below the column and before the steering gearbox.

With someone else turning the wheel, recheck the connection and ability to rotate and flex smoothly at the lower end (or) disconnect it there and see if it corrects the problem.

Good luck
Doug
