Steering Column Repair: steering column, chevy monte carlo, monte carlo ls

Hi I have a 2000 chevy monte carlo ls 3.4 and recently I pulled up at work and got out normaly and when I came back my key wouldn't turn in my ignition and my steering wheel is loose I can turn all the way left and all the way right as if I was driving. I wonder what the problem is? Idk weather its my ignition are jus that my key won't turn because my steering wheel won't lock plz help me out on this 1 thx

this is a very common problem with the Monte Carlo, Impala, Grand Am & Alero.  the lock stops reading the key and will not allow it to rotate in the switch.  It's nothing you did or could prevent, nor is it related to the steering wheel.
You will need a new lock cylinder and it will cost between $300 & $450 depending on who does it.  I would start with a locksmith as they are mobile and cheaper than a dealer.

Lastly, if you have a good roadside protection plan with your insurance company (most do), they will reimburse for some of that expense ...it's like a lock-out claim).
