My steering wheel now spins completely free.  You can turn it endlessly to the right or left without affecting the front wheels at all.

I have no way of diagnosing your problem without seeing the vehicle, but I an idea. It could be a problem in the rack and pinion steering. It could be that something is broken between the steering column and rack. It would not be a tie rod because at least one wheel would turn.
Bottom line is that you will need to have it towed to a garage that repairs steering. Stay away from the dealers because you will pay too much and may get a longer warranty going to a garage.
