Subaru Repair: speedometer, subaru legacy wagon, speedo gear

Why did the speedometer stop working in my 1993 subaru legacy wagon?  The check engine came on at the same time.
Are both related?

You have to understand that I can give advice, give you possible solutions, and let you know if something is typical or not.

But there is no way I can answer "why did my speedo quit working" with any accuracy without looking at the car.

It could be one of many issues and yea it is possible that the check engine light and the speedo not working are related.


It could be a cable, broken drive adapter, faulty speedo gear in the differential, faulty speed sensor, or bad speedo drive in the cluster.
