Towing Issues: Retrieval of personal property from van, california dmv, tow yard

Question
I can't afford to bail out my van, so I accept the loss.
But the contents are of importance to me. The tow yard is
setting a "15-minute" limit to the time I have to clean it
out, which makes it impossible. Is this legally sanctioned?
Do I have any recourse for retrieval? I am in Santa Monica,
California, but California DMV has no answer.

Answer
I would say that it sounds like the "tow company policy" is what you are encountering... I do not know that you can be "limited in time in yard (unless its after business hours) but then again its hard to say what the reasoning is.

Also it might depend on why and who had it towed. Police ordered tows sometimes have different restrictions on what can be done...

As to getting all the property, well you can check with the police also, but they most likely are going to tell you that it is a civil matter.

And I would like to say that anything that is "ATTACHED, bolted, screwed or otherwise attached" can not be removed, so stereos, speakers, tires, rims and such can not be removed as a rule...

Sorry that I do not have many answers, but like I said, it sounds like company policy.
