Towing Issues: Sold Car 10 Years Ago - Tow Operator Asking For Fees, oregon department of motor vehicles, department of motor vehicles

Question
I sold a car about 10 years ago when I was 18 years old.  I did not properly notify the DMV in Oregon of the sale.  I received a certified letter from a towing company in the state of Washington holding me responsible for the towing and storage charges.  I have contacted Oregon Department Of Motor Vehicles and let them know I sold the car in 1998.  They said they entered that information into their system and I can obtain this "proof of notice of sale" on Monday.  Can I use this along with a bill of sale to contest them holding me responsible as I was not the legal owner of the car at the time it was towed even though I was the registered owner?

Answer
OUCH,  you had a vehicle running around which you sold 10 years ago which was still in your name. I hope it was not being driven..

As to the "proof of notice of sale" well that would depend on what the tow company in Washington is going to believe paperwork wise...

I think there is more to this question which I do not know the answers to, and I would attempt to follow the procedures though and see what they say... After all they might agree, but then again it might wind up with you in court or collections as per Washington State Laws. Yes that will also be a factor as even though you live in Oregon and it was registered in Oregon, it was towed in Washington and those laws are the ones which apply.

Good luck
