Towing Issues: towing car with expired tags, rental contracts, apartment management

Question
I recently moved into an apartment complex in silver springs md. they gave me a decal to display in my window which was done. my tags were a few days expired. even though the apartments are private property do they have the legal right to tow with no warning or 72 hour notice

Answer
from the sounds of it, you were towed under authorization of the apartment management for the expired tags...

Having a permit does no good if there are rules and regulations in the rental or lease agreements which cover parking issues... And most places have them in there which say things like "vehicles must be licensed, tagged, insured, operational" when parked on the property...

Most of the time that is so that "Eye Sores" do not remain there..

BUT a lot of it depends on the management and how they view things such as expired tags, I know when I worked in Oregon doing tow aways, we had one complex that if it was 1 minute after midnight the next month from when the tag expired they wanted to tow the vehicles... Always a big problem and we finally dropped the account due to the headaches it caused.

On to the notice and warning issue, well that can be done a few ways, but generally a simple note is left on the vehicle and that usually works.. But like anything, notes can be removed, ignored or they can be destroyed by nature.
Then again there is the "notice given" in the lease - rental contracts, and any signs in the complex or at the entrances which deal with towing...

I hope this helps but I know Maryland is currently updating and changing the laws regarding towing and as such a search does produce results and answers it also does provide old laws and proposed laws which are not in effect yet... Add to that City and County regulations and it gets confusing... I have heard that they are currently trying to "standardize the regulations" so that there is not a big patchwork mess like is currently in places.
