Towing Issues: U Haul towing program says my jeep is too light to tow, vw passat, jeep cherokee

I went by Uhaul to get a class III hitch installed on my 88 Jeep Cherokee (2DR 4WD w/4.0L 6 cylinder engine).  The manual says it is rated to tow 5000lbs and my intention was to dolly tow our 2000 VW Passat Wagon (FWD).  Their program states that my vehicle is too light to tow.  Haven't asked them whether they would still rent me a dolly but I got the sense that if their system said no, they weren't going to.  Would appreciate any insight you can provide and recommendations.  Thanks.

Well, UHAUL has done great research into what is tow able behind vehicles, and unfortunately if they say no, then its no using their equipment..
After all they are trying to protect themselves from lawsuits now...  We all know that people will do what they want and then sue when it goes wrong.

I have no real answers for you as to what to do, other than check a few other rental places and see if they agree with UHAUL .
