Towing Issues: Towing abandoned car in Oregon, oregon dmv, storage fees

Question
A friend sold a her car with no transfer paperwork.  A few months later she was notified by the DMV that a car registered in her name was found abandoned and that she is liable for the towing and stroage charges.  She can produce a letter from her insurance company stating when she cancelled the insurance and the reason she gave. However she cannot produce much else.

The car is worthless and she doesn't want it back.  Can she simply transfer the car over to the tow company without being liable for the tow and storage?

Answer
well failure to follow Oregon DMV rules on title transfer is what this is..  Yes the last registered owner is responsible for towing and storage fees.. (lots of people do not follow the law though) and as such this issue is very common..

The lack of paperwork is not going to help her at all. I would suggest that she talk to the towing company and see what arrangements she can make with them.. Some companies will take the title, some will not.. Some want partial payment for the services they provided (they do have expenses for towing and also doing the notification paperwork)

Just depends on the attitudes of everyone involved.
This looks to be one  of those life lessons on vehicle ownership and the problems of selling vehicles..
Sorry for such bad news..
