Towing Issues: towing of 1979 GMC K15, auto hauler, k15

Question
Shayne, I have a 1979 GMC K15 short bed with automatic transmission. I am planning to move from Utah to W.V.. The rental movers (u-haul, etc.) will not rent me a dolly because my truck is to heavy. I was wondering if using a tow bar will screw up my truck in any way.   Dave

Answer
Using a tow bar on that truck will not damage the truck.  The transmission is another matter.  I don't have any literature going that far back but....  if it has a manual transfer case, putting the transfer case in neutral should be enough.  I would still remove both driveshafts just for good measure.  It's a one time move, so it's not difficult to do.

I don't reccommend the use of bumper mounted tow bars because the bumper is not made to drag the truck around.  This means you would need someone to make a baseplate for the truck and you would need a tow bar capable of pulling a truck that big.

I see this becoming cost prohibitive very quickly.  I would look into either selling the truck and buying a new one when you arrive, having someone drive the truck behind you as you drive the uHaul or finding an auto hauler with an empty space on their truck as they make a run.

Best of luck,
Shayne Peterson
