Towing Issues: transmissons, gmc vehicles, whole lot of things

Question
I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy and right after my husband towed his boat to the lake to fish I got in the Jimmy and put it in drive and drove started to the grocery storebbut decided to go back for something and tried to put it in reverse but could not!  I assume the transmission is sheared but woul like to know what causes it to happen? Thank you.

Answer
Towing a bass boat should not have caused any problems.
There should be a towing package equiped on your Jimmy which
should include a transmission cooler and shift-kit. There's
not a whole lot of things that can go wrong with automatic
transmissions assuming you have an automatic. Hope you got
the drive-train warranty with your Jimmy. FYI to extend the
life of your transmission; change the fluid and filter
every 2 years (the filter is inside the transmission)
automatics only, change the gear oil (manual transmission)
no filter every 2or3 years. Never have your Jimmy towed with
the drive wheels (rear wheels unless 4x4) on the ground
without having the drive shaft removed, I recommend a flat
bed tow truck for all GMC vehicles. If a transmission over
heats its pretty well ruined although it may continue to
operate on a limited basis. Some of the things that can go
wrong is overheating, low fluid, improper towing by a tow
truck, blown seals, loose linkage and dirt inside the trans
mission causing the valves to stick; thats for automatics.
As for manuals: broken shift forks or bad bearings or of
course a broken gear, low or no gear-oil will allow the
trans to overheat causing the brass to melt. (which is what
happens during towing if the drive-shaft is not removed)
I hope this information helps in you quest for knowledge.
Your local libarary will have more info you'll be interested
in. Check the reference sections automotive manuals find your Jimmy and there will be a section for trouble-shooting.
In that section you should find questions and answers related to your query.    Good Luck and please don't forget
