Toyota Repair: 94 camry problem, speedometer needle, grating noise

Question
QUESTION: My 94 Camry (I4, auto transmission) with 183 K ran fine until the day before yesterday when I drove at 65 mph in a highway. The speedometer needle suddenly swing between 20 to 100 and stopped at 20 eventually. I pulled over and found the car did not move at all gears. The engine runs well at “P” and “N”. At “R”,”P”,”2” and “L”, the car shakes and would not go. When I put back from “R” to “P”, I can hear grating noise. With engine off, I can still push the car to roll.

thank you for your suggestion!

ANSWER: The noise would indicate a transmission problem, are there any warning lights on the dash on with the engine running?

QUESTION: No warning lights on the dash. Thank you.

Answer
It sounds like a mechanical problem with the transmission or possibly an axle problem, check to make sure the front drive axles are still engaged all the way into the transmission, with the front wheels off the ground turn the wheels by hand and see if there is anything obvious loose, check the CV joints andlisten for any noise coming from the differential area, also check the differential fluid level or drain the fluid to check for any metal particles on the magnetic drain plug and in the oil.
