Toyota Repair: 2002 Toyota Camry 60K Preventative Maintenance, 2002 toyota camry, power steering fluid

Question
What preventative maintenance is required on my 2002 Toyota Camry?

Answer
I will assume that you have the 2.4ltr 4-cylinder engine. The questions you're asking has been controversial for quite some time. I will list things that I feel are necessary for a 60k service. Though Toyota will recommend different services, there are things that apply to different engines. For example, valve adjustments. Most Toyota engines do not need valve adjustments unless the head is being rebuilt because they have "shim type" valves. In the shim type valve train, all you do is check the clearance between the cam lobe and the shim according to specification. The last known engine that I can think of that required a true valve adjustment was the 22R or the 22RE engine and these engines needed it every 15,000 miles. In any case, that doesn't apply to you.

Here's the service list:

1. Oil & filter change.
2. Air filter change.
3. Trans service or trans flush. (automatic trans only)
4. FWD gear box fluid change (standard trans only)
5. Rotate tires & check tire pressure.
6. Flush radiator & new thermostat and radiator cap.
7. Spark plugs. (platinum)
8. Check condition of brakes and adjust hand brake.
9. Inspect all belts and hoses.
10. I would recommend that you change the timing belt (V-6 only)
11. Top off brake fluid, power steering fluid
12. Clean and seal battery terminals.
