Toyota Repair: R for reverse indicator comes on when I press brake, light bulbs, ground connections

2001 Camry - the bulb out indicator came on a few days ago. Also, when I press the brake, the "R" transmission indicator light comes on, no matter what gear I'm in. If I'm in Drive and press the brake, the "D" and "R" will light up.  Are these related? I can't find any bulb out, but my next step will be to inspect each one visually.

Check all the bulbs in the rear, make sure the bulbs are not mixed up, some have two contacts, some have one, check the sockets for any signs of shorting to ground, make sure the white/black ground connections are tight, replace any bulbs that look smoky. If the problem is still there check the front parking light bulbs. If nothing seems to help then there may be a more serious problem such as open or shorted wiring in the trunk wire harness or a tail light relay located under the carpet on the left in the trunk or the neutral start switch on the transmission.
