Toyota Repair: speed sensor, toyota corolla dx, vehicle speed sensor

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1994 Toyota Corolla DX (1.8L) and the speedometer stays at 0 until I pick up speed, then jumps to 60-70 and stays, falls down to 0 again when I come to a stop. O/D light also flashes every once in a while. I'm going to have Autozone diagnose the flashing O/D light, but I'm just wanting to make sure the messed up speedometer is the product of a bad speed sensor. Thanks.

ANSWER: Please let me know what the trouble codes are that they retreive and I may be able to help figure this out.

QUESTION: okay i got the diagnostic codes. they are 1: (42)-Vehicle speed sensor and 2: (63)-no.2 solenoid valve. i can replace the speed sensor myself if you can point me to exactly where it's located (i.e. look under the car, under the hood, ect). And the solenoid I could replace as well or get someone to. What's your assessment and recommendations? Am I on the right track replacing these two parts?

ANSWER: The speed sensor can be located under the hood on top of the transmission, it has a 12mm size bolt attaching it with an electrical connector on it. Replace it first and see what happens the other code may go away as well.

QUESTION: i've tried replacing the vehicle speed sensor and the speedometer is still herky jerky while driving. where do i look next? i know the two codes the computer is sending out (42 VSS and 63 no.2 solenoid). i'm kind of lost now.

Answer
The speedometer itself is probably the problem, there is another speed sensor in there that sends information to the computer, the speedo is available seperately, replacing it may also solve the solenoid problem, it may log an error code because of the false input to the computer.
