Toyota Repair: Toyota Celica Problems, mass air flow sensor, toyota celica gt

Question
I don't exactly have one question but numerous problems.  I have 2000 Toyota Celica GT with a standard 1ZZ-FE engine, 85,000 miles and an automatic transmisson.

The car's heat is sporadic. The air condition works fine, but the heat does not. Sometimes if i turn on the heat it will work other times it will not. Most of the time it just blows cold air. If i leave the heat on(with cold air blowing) the heat starts to work after fifteen minutes of drving.  Other times I will have the heat completely off and it will start to work.

The cars temperature is a also alittle weird.  The car usually drives with the temp at normal (half way on the gauge), but sometimes the car hits hot(all the way up the gauge) and bounces back down.  The gauge only bounces when I'm in stop and go traffic.  When I am on the highway, the temp is fine, unless I have to slown down and speed up again.

Another issue with the car is that the exhaust is spewing out some black liquid. I know cars emit water form their exhaust, but my Celica spews out a black liquid. The exhuast has staind my garage floor. Only release black liquid when the car is on.

Please help.

Answer
My son has the same car.
Ill answer your last Q first.
Its Carbon in the water. Its probably running rich.
You need to hook up a scan tool and read the data list to determine why.
If it runs rich enough, long enough, youll get the check engine light on and a code to steer you in the right direction.
My guess is that it has a dirty MAF (mass air flow sensor)

The car has air in the cooling system. First youll need to find out why its low. You may have a leak somewhere.
Fix that first.

To get the air out.
Unbolt the overflow bottle from the radiator and bungee it as high as you can get it. Jack the front of the car up.
Open the air bleed and keep filling while its running. It may take as long as an hour. Its a real pain in the @$$.
Be patient.

DO NOT RUN THE VEHICLE IF THE TEMP GAUGE GOES BEYOND 3/4.
Shut it off, let it cool and restart the procedure.
