Toyota Repair: A fair price?, vacuum pipes, valve cover

Question
I have a 95 Avalon that has developed a small valve cover leak. I took it to a dealer that told me it would be $550 to replace the valve cover gaskets and that I also needed to replace the timing belt because it was probably soaked in oil for another $660. This seems high to me but maybe I am out of touch. A guy at work told me he changed the gaskets on his Camry with the same engine and was not hard to do.
Can you give me you oppinion please?
Thanks
Bill

Answer
I know what's involved in replacing the valve cover gaskets on this V-6 engine, the one in the front is not hard to do but if you are going to replace both of them it gets a little more involved, the intake chamber has to be removed along with all the wiring and vacuum pipes and attaching brackets, I have done a few of these and definetely would not say that this is easy.
The valve covers do not leak into the timing belt area, the only way oil can get onto the timing belt is if the camshaft or crankshaft seals are leaking so I don't know what the reason they want to replace the timing belt may be, maybe it's due to mileage, it should be replaced every 60,000 miles. The price to replace the belt at $660 seems high to me also, it should be about half of that for just the belt, maybe they are including other parts such as water pump, seals, etc. check to see just exactly what parts are going to be replaced for the $660 price.
